EXPRESSING REGRET


DESCRIPTION
Basic competence: Responding to the meaning in transactional conversation (to get things done) and interpersonal (social) and continued (sustained) accurately, fluently and acceptable that uses a variety of spoken language and involves speech: expressing regret (formal and informal)

LESSON
Learning objective: In this lesson you will learn how to express regret in English both formally and informally in daily life context.

Expressing Regret
Have you ever made a mistake? Or you’re failed in the exam because you did not study hard? Did you feel guilty when you are in those situations? Everybody may have this kind of feeling which is called as regret, an unhappy feeling about what has you done or you decided in the past. It is more than saying sorry to a person you mean. When expressing regret, people commonly put a good intention or attitude to do better, mend ways or even do effort to not do the same mistake anymore. For example, they will say:
o    I regret.
o    I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean that.

Two phrases above are very common and simple regret expression. Actually, there are so many phrases you can use to express regret. However, you should pay attention to these situations:

When you regret about something you have decided or done to older people such as your parents or teachers, you can use the following phrases for the formal context:

§   I regretfully …..
Example:
o    I regretfully I broke your glasses.

§   I am so regretful …..
Example:
o    I am so regretful broke you glasses.

§   I regret that …..
Example:
o    I regret that I have lied to you.
o    I regret that I sent the wrong parcel.

§   I regret …. (use gerund)
Example           :
o    I regret not listening to your words.
o    I regret making you worry.

You can also use these phrases informally to your friends:

§   I wish …. (use the past participle)
Examples:
o    I wish I could get the higher score for Math.
o    I wish that would not happen anymore.

§   If I had (hadn’t) …, I would (wouldn’t) have … (use conditional sentences Type 3)
Examples:
o    If I had not gone last night, my dad would not have scolded me.
o    I would not have been lost, if I had brought the map.

§   I am sorry I should/ought to have ….
Examples:
o    I am sorry I should have studied hard.
o    I am sorry I ought to have told you before.


Example in conversations:
Conversation 1
(Situation: Wulan regrets that she left lost her friend’s notebook)
Sofie                  : “Wulan, can I take my notebook?”
Wulan               : “I’m sorry. I left your book accidently in the library yesterday.”
Sofie                  : “How come? What should I do now? Tomorrow we will face exam, won’t we?”
Wulan               : “Yes. I regret leaving your book. I’m trying to copy the note. You can use mine to learn. I am really sorry.”
Sofie                  : “Is it okay?”
Wulan               : “Yes, I’m okay with that. This is my mistake.”
Sofie                  : “Alright. Thank you.”

Conversation 2
(Situation: Ivan forgot his mother’s errand)
Mother            : “Van, Have you taken the cake from Mrs. Liza?”
Ivan                    : “I’m terribly sorry, mom. I forgot”
Mother            : “Where have you been?”
Ivan                    : “I went playing football with friends.”
Mother            : “You know, Mrs. Liza must be waiting for us to take that cake.”
Ivan                    : “I regretfully I forgot it.
Mother            : “I have to call her now. You stay here.”

To sum up this lesson:
§   Remember that expressing regret means doing more than apologize.
§   “I regret” phrase can be used both formally and informally.
§   Use conditional sentence type 3 to make sure that you really regret the mistake.

§   Use “I regretfully” or “I am so regretful” to older people to show the politeness.

Expressing Love, Pleasure and Relief

Basic Competence: Responding to the meaning in transactional conversation (to get things done) and formal interpersonal (social) and continued (sustained) that uses spoken language accurately, fluently and acceptable in daily life context and involves showing attitude towards something, expressing love.

LESSON
In this lesson, you will learn about how to say and respond love, pleasure, and relief both formally and informally in daily life context.

Expression of Love
Love is kind of strong feeling or emotion which is expressed to show that someone cares. It also means having a happiness feeling. This kind of feeling will show a good attitude. It is not only showed to a special person whom really mean for you, but you can also express it to your relatives or friends. People commonly express their love by various ways such as telling by words, giving a gift or card, making a poem, singing a song, and writing a letter. However, in this lesson, you will only focus on expressing love in words.

Saying Love
There are several phrases to express love. But, when you want to express love you should pay attention to these situations:

People usually express their affection formally through a letter, poem, or song. Here are some phrases you can use:
§   I do love you.
§   Let me be with you.
§   You're just adorable.
§   I’m falling in love with you.
Example:
“Because I'm falling in love with you
It's the easiest thing for me to do
Yes, I'm falling in love with you, it's true”

When you are falling in love to a boy or a girl, you can use short phrases informally as follows:
§   I love you.
§   I adore you.
§   I think I love you.
§   I will always love you.

Some people also call their beloved person by using these phrases:
§   My dear
§   My love
§   My darling
§   My dearest one



Example:
Conversation
(Situation: Julian expresses his love to his girlfriend)
Julian       : “My dear, I have something for you.”
Vinie        : “What is it?”
Julian       : “Just open it.”
Vinie        : “A bar of chocolate. Wow..thank you darling. I love you.”
Julian       : “Your welcome, honey.

Sometimes people use exaggerated words to express their feeling as follows:
§   My heart is in your hands.
§   I'm absolutely crazy about you.
§   I cannot stop thinking about you.
§   My heart can’t stop beating when I see you.

Expression of Relief
When you are in a bad situation because of facing problems, you will feel worried, won’t you? But, after solving those problems you will feel relief.
Relief is a situation where you can end your bad feeling such as pain and worry. This kind of expression that something terrible has not happened anymore or it has ended is called expression of relief.
Here are some short phrases you can use to express relief:
  • Oh, good!
  • What a relief!
  • That's a relief!
§  Oh, marvelous!,
§  I’m glad it was done.
Example:
(Situation: Tiara is almost late to take the airplane)
Tiara                  : “What time does the airplane take off?”
Jovan                : “It should be on 4.30.”
Tiara                  : “Ah, it’s 4.45. I’m late.”
Jovan                : “Don’t worry. The departure is delayed for an hour because of bad weather.”
Tiara                  : “What a relief!”

Another phrase that usually used formally as follows:
§  Thanks my goodness!
§  Thank goodness you're safe.
§  I'm glad everything's running well.
§  Thank God for .... (mention your problem)
§  It’s a relief to know that .... (mention what you have solved)
Example:
Conversation
(Situation: Arfin has just got an accident, but he is safe)
Dina                   : “What happen to you? Your hand is bleeding.”
Arfin                  : “I just got an accident when I was going to school.”
Dina                   : “Oh..poor you.”
Arfin                  : “The rider who hit me passed away in that accident, but I’m still alive.”
Dina                   : “Thank goodness you're safe.”

Conversation
(Situation: Rendi has just passed the exam and it was running well)
Renata              : “What’s going on? You look so happy.”
Rendi                : “I have just passed the exam. I’m glad everything’s running well.
Renata              : “That’s good. Congratulations!”
Rendi                : “Thanks.”

Expression of Pleasure
Expression of pleasure is an expression to show happiness feeling because of something happen.
Here are the following phrases you can be used:
§  That’s great.
§  It is really delightful./I am delighted.
§  It’s really a great pleasure.
§  I am pleased.
§  That’s wonderful.
§  It’s a pleasure!

INFORMAL CONGRATULATION
DESCRIPTION
Basic Competence: Responding to the meaning in transactional conversation (to get things done) and interpersonal (social) in formal and informal context accurately, fluently and acceptable which uses a variety of simple spoken language in different contexts of daily life and involves speech: expressing informal congratulation.

LESSON
In this lesson, you will learn about how to express informal congratulation in the daily conversation.

INFORMAL CONGRATULATION
Have you ever got congratulations? You may be often congratulated by your friends, teachers, parents, or relatives. Congratulations is an expression that given by other people to show happy expression or emotional. It can be used in several special occasions such as birthday party, new born baby, wedding party, or even at work when someone has got job promotion. However, you should pay attention to the situation below:

To congratulate someone’s achievement, people commonly use the following phrases:
§   Congratulations!
§   Well done!
§   Good Job!

But, you can also use “congratulations on ….” to mention the achievement. For examples:
§   Congratulations on your birthday.
§   Congratulations on getting the title.
§   Congratulations on passing the exam.
§   Congratulations on your job promotion.
§   Congratulations on getting a scholarship.

You can also use the word “Happy” to congratulate others informally. This context is more general and shorter. However, the meaning is still the same. For example, “Happy Birthday” has same meaning with “Congratulation on your birthday.”
You can also use the word “Happy” in certain special day or religions, people commonly say:
§   Happy Wesak Day!
§   Happy Feast Day!
§   Happy New Year!
§   Merry Christmas!
§   Happy led Day!

Conversation 1 : 
(Situation: two best friends is talking about university)
Doni                 : “Hi Adhi! I heard that you had join UNPAR with PMDK way is it true?”
Adhi                 : “I think I just have big luck.”
Doni                 :  “No! You are awesome and a great person. You are the smartest boy in our class. So you deserve it!”
Adhi                 : “Thanks Don. I appreciate it!”
Doni                 : “You’re welcome. By the way congratulations for joining UNPAR so early with great way!”
Adhi                 : “Thanks Don.”
Doni                 : “Don’t mention it”

Conversation 2
(Situation: Fanny has got a new born baby )
Denny             : “Fan, you look so happy. Would you tell me something that makes you happy?”
Fanny              : “Of course. I just had a baby two days ago and I feel super happy, but tired too.”
Denny             :” I’m happy to hear that you already had a baby!  “Congratulations on your new born baby. But, you also have to rest more.”
Fanny              : “Thanks Den. I think I can have a rest this week long.”
Denny             : “That’s good!”


To sum up the lesson, informal congratulations:
-          Is an expression which is used in informal situations such as birthday party, wedding party, got job promotion, etc.
-          Has several short phrases which can be used in daily life context such as Congratulations!, Well done!, Good Job!
-          Can use “Congratulations on ….” to mention the achievement.
-          Can use the word “Happy” or “I’m happy for …” to show that you also feel the happiness.
